Internal parasites vary from country to country, with roundworms and tapeworms of different varieties being the most common.

Roundworms (Toxocara) have a complicated life cycle that makes them very succesful in infecting puppies. The larvae invade the body tissues of both pups and adults. They remain dormant until about two-thirds of the way through the dam's pregnancy, when they migrate into the foetuses, in the uterus, and develop in the bowel.

Puppies also ingest worm eggs along with their mother's milk and can pick them up from contaminated surroundings. Regular treatment of both puppies and mother is essential to break the cycle but even adult dogs should continue to be treated six-monthly or annually to deal with any subsequent infestations they may pick up.

Treatment for tapeworm, heartworm, lungworm etc, should also be carried out at regular intervals according to the country you live in.

We suggest you use Drontal puppy liquid for puppies from the age of 2 weeks to 12 weeks at 2 week intervals. Panacur can be used to treat the pregnant dam, but we do advise using Drontal for puppies.
