Uterine Inertia

Before the arrival of the first puppy it is inadvisable to allow your bitch to continue to have contractions for more than two hours without seeking veterinary advice.

Similarly, if your bitch has been straining for more than an hour and a half between puppies or has been sitting about panting and in distress without straining, call the vet as there may be a problem with uterine inertia. It is important not to leave her without taking action. A Caesarean may be necessary to deliver the puppies.

The majority of bitches accept their pups once they come around from the anaesthetic but you need to ensure the puppies are dried and kept warm for the short time the mother is out of action. Suturing from the Caesarean does not seem to impede the pups or cause too much discomfort to the mother while feeding, but you should keep an extra-vigilant eye on her.
